Notes on Coverage and Terminology

The studio visits and project breakdowns published here reflect the working conditions and material choices of the individual makers we feature. Techniques, tool recommendations, and sourcing advice are shared as observed in a specific workshop at a specific time. They are not universal prescriptions, and results will vary with your own equipment, materials, and environment.

When we refer to "local materials," we mean resources commercially available within South Africa at the time of writing. Availability shifts with seasons and supply chains, so we encourage readers to confirm current stock and pricing with their own suppliers before committing to a project.

Tool guides are based on hands-on testing of entry-level equipment intended for hobbyists moving toward more regular practice. We do not claim that any single tool is the definitive choice for every workshop. Your space, budget, and the type of work you plan to do should guide the final decision.

Workshop safety notes are included as general guidance, not as a substitute for professional instruction or the manufacturer's own safety documentation. Always read the manual, wear appropriate protection, and work within your skill level.

Profiles of emerging artists are editorial features, not paid promotions. We do not accept compensation in exchange for coverage, and all opinions expressed in reviews are our own.

The term "maker culture" is used broadly to describe independent, small-batch creative production. We recognize that craft traditions in South Africa are diverse and predate the contemporary maker movement; our coverage aims to document current practices without erasing their deeper histories.
